Killing this character: Plot it out with me. He probably deserves it.

Using telepathy/mind-reading on this character: For now, it'll be a no because he has a very good control over his thoughts and feelings thanks to his Unversed.

✘Now for the Kingdom Hearts Stuff.

What is darkness?
I'm going to link over to this lovely bit someone wrote on their permissions.

Darkness isn't necessarily bad, just as light isn't necessarily good. They both exist in everyone unless you're a Princess of Heart (and/or Ventus), or if you let the darkness take over. King Mickey uses the Kingdom Key D, which is from the Realm of Darkness, and he never had to worry about darkness taking him over.

Darkness is pretty much all your negative emotions to the extreme. The hate, anger, jealousy, etc... Think of it as Hershey Chocolate. You know how it's good in a tiny amount, or like baked in to something? The Hershey bar has this certain flavor that can make most people sick if they gobble too many. That is pretty much how darkness is. You put it with marshmallows(light) and make some S'mores, it's pretty great, but eating nothing but it and in large quantities, it's bad.

Vanitas is a being of pure Hershey Chocolate Darkness.


What are the Unversed?
The Unversed are Vanitas' fledgling emotions. Thanks to his unnatural creation and being completely of darkness, his emotions literally ran wild. Despite Master Xehanorts purposely misleading claims, Vanitas actually has full control over these critters, which is why when he talks he sounds "calm" or distant. 

Can my character(s) see them wandering around?
Vatheon- Yes.

Can my character(s) destroy any Unversed they come across?
Yup. It will cause Vanitas pain, but he's used to it. He's spent a whole game sending them to ALL OF THE WORLDS and having them annihilated. Go for it.
And you're allowed to have them go after a local, hurt your own character, etc...
They are especially drawn to characters with strong darkness or strong light.

Question!
On a scale with one being puppy kicking, hershey chocolate darkness, and ten being Snow White, where does your character stand?

Vanitas is drawn to either extreme, but especially those high on the light side.
Note: In Kingdom Hearts, nearly everyone has a little bit of darkness in them.
